While on my trip to Washington, D.C., I was invited to see a movie with the guys I was sharing a hotel room with. The film happened to be Parasite, a foreign language South Korean film. Despite the title, it has nothing to do with parasites or any illnesses. Directed by Bong Joon Ho and released this year, it tells the story of a very poor family living in a rundown South Korean basement apartment. The family is very unmotivated and none are properly employed. However, the son, Ki-woo Kim (Choi Woo-Shik), is able to score a job tutoring a teenage girl of a wealthy family by lying about his education. Soon, his entire family, consisting of his mother, father, and sister, become employed by the family doing various jobs around the house. They accomplish this by lying and framing the previous workers so a spot opens up for them. Soon, the family is making lots of money and are enjoying the lifestyle. However, with all these lies they are using to keep their jobs, things don’t always go to plan... The film is quite bizarre, yet intriguing. The title isn’t used to describe an actual parasite, it’s used to describe the poor family “leeching” off the rich family. It’s quite genius. I wasn’t the biggest fan of this film, but I liked it for its suspense and plot. I would definitely recommend this film to any South Korean film lovers. I rate this film GOOD on the scale.
