Before I go home, let me review one film while I’m still at college. I remember the movie Shrek as a young kid. I know it’s become a huge meme now, but this inaugural winner of the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar is a classic and always will be. Shrek was released in 2001, and although everybody has seen it, to those who can’t remember it or, god forbid, have never seen it, allow me to refresh your memory. It tells the story of Shrek (Mike Myers), a large green ogre who is largely outcast by society. The film takes place in a fairy tale world where fairy tale creatures are ostracized and oppressed by the leader, Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). As Lord Farquaad is unmarried, he cannot be a king, so he sets out to find a wife. He chooses to send men out to save Princess Fiona, a princess trapped in a castle, guarded by a dragon. By a twist of fate, Shrek is sent to save Fiona. Teaming up with a wisecracking Donkey (Eddie Murphy), he sets out to save her. Unbeknownst to everyone, Fiona has an unusual defect which could change the course of everything... Shrek is a delightful film which has many funny moments and an entertaining plot. When I rewatched it recently, I noticed a lot of adult innuendos that I missed when I previously watched it, which made it even better! I can’t talk about Shrek without talking about All Star! This film put band Smash Mouth on the map with their song, All Star, being in the opening title sequence. It was originally made for the film Mystery Men, but Shrek popularized it. All in all, Shrek is one of the greatest animated films of all time and is one that will be a timeless classic. I rate this film EXCEPTIONAL on the scale.
